Last month, Fox aired fan favorite Zooey Deschanels trailer for her new, off-beat comedy “The New Girl.”
Coming this fall, Zooey plays a passionate, awkward, nerdy woman named Jessica Day who has recently been dumped without warning in the worst way. To remedy this, she moves in with three men who decide to help her come back to herself. However, it should be noted that this is not a Prince saves Princess story. It is vibrant, modern, and all about liberation as a woman in a media-driven country.
Its not a musical, but it has the vibrancy of a musical, and my character sings all the time, like out of nowhere, Zooey says, according to Hollywood Crush. I feel like theres a generation of girls that are taught to just be themselves, which is amazing. And this is the first [show] that Ive come across on TV [that projects that].
According to The Huffington Post, feminism has always been close to Zooeys heart. A recent article features a letter 17-year-old Zooey wrote to Vogue magazine about the connotations and expectations their articles may create. I dont think any woman should have to feel as if she needs to shove herself into an ideal to be beautiful, she says. Beauty should be something that is celebrated and something that is enjoyable, not something that people should feel uncomfortable about achieving .As American women, we dont need discouragement, but inspiration.
