Father’s day is a day to honor not only our own father but all the fathers in our lives. Many of us may take for granted all that fathers do, so this holiday is a chance to show them just how important they are. Including sons, brothers, cousins, husbands, or friends, use this year’s celebration as an opportunity to do something special with a father.

While there are several ways to celebrate Father’s day, something simple but unique can go a long way. This year, avoid the commercialized gift baskets, crowded restaurants, and the hassle of cooking a large meal by doing something that you may have never done or don’t usually do. Here are some suggestions on how to uniquely celebrate Father’s Day.

1) Take him on a Spa Day

While spa days might not be the most masculine thing in the world, no one can argue they aren’t a relaxing way to spend your day. Make reservations if necessary at the nearest spa or the one of your choice. Nothing will relieve his stress from the years of caring for his children like a full body massage.

2) Take him to a baseball game

Now that baseball season has begun, take him out to a ball game this Father’s Day so he can enjoy one of America’s favorite pastimes. If there are no MLB games close by, try to find a minor league game or go support some local youth baseball! Nothing says Father’s Day like a day at the ballpark.

3) Have a Picnic in the Park

If the weather permits, a picnic in the park is a great alternative to paying for some pricey meal at a crowded restaurant. Take him to the closest park with a blanket and some food from home and set up your picnic in a nice grassy, open area. This is a great way to get some fresh air while spending quality time with him.

4) Go see a drive-in-movie

Although they may be scarce, a drive-in movie theater is a great place to go and enjoy a film. While traditional movie theaters have unbelievably high snack prices, you can bring your own snacks to the drive-in-movie. What he will probably enjoy most is the fact that he doesn’t have to wait until the movie is over to complain out loud!

5) Take him on a scenic drive

Using a quick internet search, you should be able to find a scenic driving route. Let him ride in the passenger seat while you take the wheel and show him the beauty of nature from the comfort of the car. There is nothing he will enjoy more as long as he gets to have control of the radio.

Remember all of those flowers you worked hard to plant this spring? It’s now time to reap the benefits from your hard work! Homemade flower arrangements are a great way to enjoy your blooms to the fullest and give your home a sweet and airy summertime feel. If you don’t have a flower garden that’s ok–flowers from a local grocery store or farmer’s’ market work great too!

Here are 5 steps for creating a beautiful flower arrangement:

1. Create a grid out of tape

Flowers 2.

If you’re using florals with top heavy blooms, then creating a grid out of clear tape is a  great and effective way to support your flowers. If you’re using flowers with longer stems, you’ll want to be sure to cut the stems down before placing your flowers in the grid openings.

2. Incorporate branches

Flowers 1.

Adding branches to your flower arrangement not only adds texture, but they also help to support more delicate stems that you might have in your arrangement. Using branches is a great way to incorporate foliage that you already have in your own backyard.

3.  Use complimentary colors

Flowers 3

When it comes to creating a flower arrangement, color is the most important factor. Consider colors that complement each other, such as yellows and purples, pinks and blues. White florals and baby’s breath are great for adding a touch of softness to your arrangement.

4. Layer your flowers

Flowers 4

Once you are ready to place your flowers in your arrangement, you should begin by placing your larger and more dominant flowers in your vessel first. Next, you should use a second variety of flowers to create an inner circle. As you continue this process, try to create a domed effect by leaving the stems slightly longer on the inner flowers.

5. Add berries or other greenery last

Flowers 5

Once you have your flowers arranged to your liking, it is now time to add berries and other greenery. These elements are optional, but they help to add texture and visual interest to your arrangement. An added bonus of using these elements is that they add fullness to your arrangement, giving an extravagant look without an extravagant price.

A great way to put your farmers market produce to work is to create a delicious garden salad. With the summer heat, comes those summer flavors that you crave — sweet corn, savory peppers, and juicy tomatoes. The best thing about salads is that they only take a few minutes to prepare and will keep you full all day.

Here are three tasty salad recipes you’ll want to try this summer:

Spinach salad with gorgonzola, pistachios, and pepper jelly vinaigrette

Salad 1.

Red pepper jelly adds the light tangy flavor you desire in the summer heat.

Ingredients: ¼ c. red pepper jelly, 2 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, ⅛ tsp kosher salt, ⅛ tsp freshly ground black pepper, 8 c. fresh baby spinach, ¼ c. (1 oz.) crumbled gorgonzola cheese, ¼ c. dry roasted pistachios

Directions:

1. Place pepper jelly in a 1 c. glass measure. Microwave on high 30 seconds. Add cider vinegar, oil, salt, and black pepper, stirring with a whisk until blended. Cool to room temperature.

2. Combine spinach and cheese in a large bowl. Drizzle vinegar mixture over spinach mixture; toss well. Sprinkle with nuts. Serve immediately.

Heirloom Tomato and Chicken Toss

Salad 2.

Summertime usually means lots of time spent outdoors, which also means bigger appetites in the evening. For a warm and flavorful meal that won’t leave you overly stuffed, try this heirloom tomato and chicken toss salad.

Tip: Serve this salad with an abundance of crusty bread to soak up the flavorful tomato juices.

Ingredients: 4 tbsp white vinegar, 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, 2 ½ tbsp granulated sugar, 1 ½ tsp kosher salt, ½ tsp black pepper, 3 c. shredded cooked chicken, 2 lbs heirloom tomatoes cut into ½ to 1 inch wedges, 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme

Directions:

Whisk together vinegar, olive oil, sugar, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Gently toss together chicken, tomatoes, onion, basil, chives, parsley, and thyme in a large bowl. Add vinegar mixture, and gently toss until thoroughly combined. Serve immediately, or cover and let stand at room temperature for up to 1 hour.

Fresh corn salad

Salad 3.

For those who like to add a little heat to your meals, you will enjoy how this salad blends hot jalapeños with sweet flavorful corn.

Ingredients: ½ c. cider vinegar, ¼-⅓ c. sugar, 1 tsp. Kosher salt, ½ tsp coarsely ground black pepper, 4 ears fresh corn, ½ c. finely diced red onion, soaked in ice water for 20 minutes and patted dry, ½ c. cucumber, seeded, not peeled if unwaxed, then diced to same size of onions, ½ c. red or orange sweet pepper, diced to same size as onions, ½ c. cherry or pear tomatoes, halved or quartered, 3 tbsp parsley, finely torn, 1 tbsp basil leaves or buds, pulled apart, 1 tbsp fresh jalapeno, seeds and pith removed, very finely diced*, ½ tsp sea salt or kosher salt, 1 – 2 c. small arugula leaves

Directions:

1. For dressing, in a glass bowl whisk together vinegar, sugar, the 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and black pepper until sugar is dissolved. Let dressing stand while preparing salad.

2. For salad, cut corn kernels from cobs. In a large bowl toss corn and remaining ingredients except sea salt and arugula leaves.

3. To serve, transfer salad to large serving bowl. Season with the 1/2 tsp. sea salt. Add the dressing; gently weave in arugula leaves. Serve immediately. (Cucumbers and tomatoes will begin to break down.)

Warm weather is bound to be on the horizon, which will have us daydreaming about lounging by the pool with a good book (or tablet). To enhance your outdoor reading we’ve compiled a list of gadgets that will turn your poolside reading time into a backyard oasis.

Reading Sunglasses

Reading Sunglasses

Reading sunglasses are exactly what they seem: sunglasses that have a reading glasses prescription. There are two main kinds of reading sunglasses: bifocal sunglasses and full sun readers. The tinted, sun reader lenses are perfect for outdoor use.

Wide Brimmed Hat

You’ve got your stylish reading sunglasses, now all you need is a wide brimmed hat. A wide brimmed hat will not only keep the sun off your face, but will give you proper shade so there is no need to squint while reading.

Umbrella Halogen Heater

Umbrella Halogen Heater

Have you ever wanted to read outside on a starry, summer night but it’s just a little too chilly? An umbrella halogen heater attaches to standard umbrella poles making it easy to enjoy a summer night with a good book.

Everyday Innovations Bookmarker

This simple accessory is perfect for the avid notetaker. The Bookmarker is a replaceable pen and bookmark rolled into one, with 100 sticky notes for marking off pages and a strap for holding your book shut as well.

Anti-Glare Screen Protector

Screen Protector

For the reader who has gone electronic, an anti-glare screen protector is just what you need for your device. Tablets are great for indoor reading, but once they are taken into the sun, text can become obstructed by glare and finger smudges. To boost the clarity of your device and cut down on glare, definitely consider an anti-glare screen protector.
