Volunteers are the unsung heroes out there on the front lines making a difference in communities, and making the world a better place. April 20th is dedicated to honoring volunteers all over the world, as this day has been deemed Volunteer Recognition Day. This day recognizes the big and small differences that volunteers are making worldwide.

If Volunteer Recognition Day has you thinking about volunteering, but you’re not sure how to get involved, here are a few ways you can find the right opportunity:

Choose a cause that you’re passionate about

When searching for a volunteer opportunity it is important to find a cause that you are passionate about. There are so many worthy and great causes out there to choose from, and it will be very rewarding knowing you are making a difference on a topic that really matters to you.

Find an opportunity that matches your skills and schedule

If you love spending time in your garden and are blessed with a green thumb, then participating in a “keeping your community beautiful” event may be perfect for you. Finding an opportunity that aligns with your skill set will ensure a smoother volunteer experience. It is also important that you are finding an opportunity that matches your schedule, as organizations rely heavily on their volunteers being able to attend the shifts that they have signed up for.

Attend volunteer trainings

Most organizations hold training days for their new volunteers before their first day of volunteering. Even if you have found an opportunity that matches your skills it is important to take advantage of this opportunity so that you learn the organization’s various processes, and can ask any questions you may have. Attending volunteer trainings will help ease any nerves you may have and will also introduce you to your fellow volunteers.

Don’t be afraid to learn new things

Volunteering is a great way to experiment with new activities. If there is an activity or event that you find interesting, but don’t necessarily have experience in that area, don’t be afraid to sign up anyway. The majority of organizations will be happy to assign you to a beginner role so that you have the opportunity to learn about what they do and grow at your own pace.

Have fun

Don’t forget to have fun while volunteering. Enjoy the rewarding feeling that comes from working to better the quality of life for others. You won’t forget the memories and friends that you make from these opportunities.

No matter where you live or what your skill set is, there is a worthy cause that would be thrilled to have your help, or even a volunteer who appreciates your gratitude. Happy Volunteer Recognition Day!
