Today we have a special treat on the Reading Glasses Shopper Blog: A guest post from two savvy makeup gurus, Willa and Flo over at Makeup Writes. They’re sharing how to wear makeup with glasses — there are tips and tricks for both the nearsighted and farsighted out there!

Choosing what makeup to wear with glasses can be tricky, so here’s a fool-proof look that works with reading glasses and nearsighted glasses! The idea is to make your eyes the focus point while keeping structure and definition throughout your face.

Eyes: Neutral definition

  • Use an eye primer or long wear cream shadow in a color similar to your natural skin tone as a base to make your shadows last all day.
  • Next go all over your lid with a light layer of a color that is one shade darker than your skin. By doing this you are building natural-looking definition and shadow that will look believable under your glasses.
  • Now define your crease with a taupe color that is quite a bit darker than your skin. Also use this on your lower lash line, but use it sparingly as you don’t want to look like you have dark shadows.
  • Use a fluffy brush to make sure all your shadows are blended and there are no harsh edges. I recommend using a slightly harder hand when applying eye shadows if you’re wearing glasses as the effect can be reduced behind the lenses.
  • Next go in with a liquid or gel eye-liner. If you wear nearsighted glasses (to see far away), line your eyes all the way around. If you wear reading glasses (which magnify your eyes),  use a lighter hand and blend to make sure there are no smudges or wavy edges. The magnification of your lenses will only enhance eye liner mistakes! Black is always a classic but if you want to go more conservative then try a brown. A dark navy blue is also great for making your eye color pop, especially brown eyes.
  • For a bold eye (like pictured above), use your liner to create a graphic bold line only on your upper lash line. Go as dramatic as you dare for the day! We want your eyes to pop and liner always helps.
  • Curl your lashes and apply a liberal amount of mascara. It’s essential to define your lashes so they stand out!

Face: Endurance is the Key

  • Start off with a long-lasting liquid foundation. Smooth this all over your face using your fingers.
  • Then go in with an under-eye concealer. Not only should the concealer cover under-eye bags, but it should also brighten and prevent creasing. Wearing glasses can cast a shadow under your eyes, while also magnifying fine lines!
  • Pop your glasses on now to see how it looks, if your need any more brightening go back in for more using a highlighting concealer pen.
  • Even if you don’t normally powder, you must powder where your glasses meet your face (on the bridge of your nose, for example). Because constantly removing your reading glasses can wear your makeup away!
  • Lightly contour your cheeks using a matte bronzer; go from the hairline into the hollows of your cheeks and blend! Then apply a blush similar to your lip color on the apples of your cheeks.

Brows: Keep them structured to frame your glasses

  • Start by plucking any stray hairs to make an easy work surface!
  • Go for a more angled arch, rather than rounded arches.
  • Then go in with your usual brow powder/pencil and fill in any gaps, while filling them in a little bit more than you usually would for that extra bit of definition. This means they will complement your frames, especially if they have a bold design!

Lips: Play it down

  • Apply a peachy lipstick with a little shine in it. You want your lips to look pretty but not to be the center of attention — save that for your eyes!
  • If you only have a matte lipstick then simply layer a gloss on top.
