Mark Ruffalo Goes Global Green

Mark Ruffalo may not have as many hearts around his neck or awards on his mantle as former co-stars Adrien Brody, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jake Gyllenhaal, but he is certainly not a rookie. Example: Did you know he had his directorial debut last year?

“Sympathy for Delicious” stars Christopher Thornton, who wrote the film, director Mark Ruffalo, Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis and Orlando Bloom.  The film almost took home the 2010 Sundance Festival Grand Jury Prize! In the end, it went to “Winter’s Bone” (directed by Debra Granik), but Mark got to take home the Special Jury Prize as consolation – not bad at all, especially since Mark knows there is more to life than showbiz.

In an article for The Hollywood Reporter, writer Degen Pener shares that Global Green honored Mark last month with the Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award for 2011 for his “campaign to ban hydrofracking, a controversial method of extracting natural gas from underground shale beds.”

Passionate and serious, the feature claims Mark even “started his own foundation, Water Defense, to bring together advocates on the issue nationwide and raise awareness of the dangers of fracking.”

“Right now, the big fight is stopping doing gas drilling in the Delaware River basin, which is where 15 million people get their drinking water,” Mark says.

Global Green executive director Matt Petersen agrees. “Natural gas is seen as a clean energy source and yet fracking is really destroying a lot of communities and their water tables,” he says. “Until Mark really shined his spotlight on gas fracking, it hadn’t gotten the attention it needed to in this country.”
