Meryl Streep Glitters in Gold + DIY Gold Readers

Hello Oscar lovers!

It’s Wednesday (Happy Leap Day!), and by now all the hoopla surrounding Sunday’s Academy Awards is fading — except here at the RGS office.

You see, we’re big fans of the Oscars, and we just can’t get enough of the memorable moments from this most-glamorous night in Hollywood.  Some of our favorites? Christopher Plummer’s win, the multiple statuettes scored by The Artist and Hugo, Best Actor winner Jean Dujardin’s endearing antics, and Octavia’s adorable acceptance speech.

But the lady of the night, Miss Meryl Streep, steals the show for us for a number of reasons. First because of her much-deserved Oscar win for Actress in a Leading Role — for her dynamic portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. She is an exquisite actress, a classic chameleon of our time, and it seems like every movie role she takes on becomes a masterpiece.

Reason number two why Meryl wows us beyond belief? That stunning gold glittering gown! She dazzles from head to toe in the Alber Elbaz at Lanvin dress, which cinches at her waist, hugs her in all the right places, and radiates her beauty from the inside out.

But our favorite Meryl moment is when she saunters onstage to present an award and pulls out— what is that we see!?— a pair of lovely readers for the teleprompter! The dainty, thick-rimmed readers (we have a similar pair to Meryl’s reading glasses) look stellar with her golden hair and those gorgeous drop earrings. Gosh she just steals our hearts every time ?

In honor of her super-savvy onstage glasses fashion, and the bevy of glittering dresses trending on the red carpet this year, we’re bringing you a Wednesday DIY craft that’s so easy, you only need two supplies. Inspired by Pinterest, we want to show you how to add glittery goodness to you own pair of readers! Here’s how you can channel Miss Meryl and add a little sparkle to an old pair of frames. What’s old is new again, especially if they make you feel like royalty :)

How to make your own glitter glasses:

reading glasses makeover supplies

  • A pair of readers (old or new, your choice)! Note: a darker solid color works best. I used these bifocals.
  • Some sparkly nail polish; use gold if you want yours to look like Meryl’s. Note: the nail polish’s base should be thick and opaque, not clear. If you opt for a clear base, try using a paint pen as your base color before you apply nail polish to the glasses.

  • Test your nail polish on a small area in the corner of your glasses to make sure your polish isn’t too goopy. You want the polish to evenly glide on for a super-smooth look.

  • Start at each corner, and paint the polish in one direction towards the glasses bridge.
  • Let the first coat dry completely.

  • Apply a second coat, making sure to cover any streaking that might have happened with your first coat.

  • And Voila! You have a pair of gorgeous, shimmery specs that are the perfect addition to every woman’s wardrobe.
Ps. You can also do this with sunglasses, too! If you like the pair I used, check out these cat eyes sunglasses.
